Settling In

Well, we are all moved in to Aunt Jennifer and Uncle Matt's house. We are so thankful for the huge sacrifice they have made to let us stay in their cozy house. Holly has extra friends in their two dogs, who are the best dogs I know of. They are so content and rarely bark at all, which is good for a household that needs sleep. :) Holly wakes up and immediately wants to play with the dogs or go outside to play with them when they are outside, which is not much since it is frigid here in Memphis.
We came home from the hospital on New Year's Eve day, but Allen ended up taking Joseph back to the hospital that very night since he threw up five times that evening. He ended up being fine; we think it was due to taking his medicine on an empty stomach. But poor Allen didn't sleep much that night, and Joseph had to be admitted again and sleep back in the hospital. But he handled going back there surprisingly well. It is amazing to see his sweet accepting spirit in all the pain he is enduring. It is encouraging but also a little heart-breaking to see him get used to his condition.
But, his condition is definitely much better than after the previous surgery. He is much more enthusiastic about playing, listening to stories told by Nana (or should I say Guido?) We have all adopted Car Movie names--Joseph is Lighning, I am Sally, Allen is Sheriff and little Holly is Mack (appointed by Joe P.). I think he has gotten really tired of TV b/c he never wants it on and now wants stories all the time. It is stretching our imagination a bit, but that is a good thing. He also seems to be a lot more comfortable and doesn't want to be lying down all the time. A major highlight so far was seeing him riding around the house on his new Thomas the Train riding toy last night. His balance also seems a lot better--not perfect, but much better than before this surgery. His legs need some strengthening, so hopefully continued activity and physical therapy will help that.
Tomorrow we have a day full of appointments at St. Jude's. Our first few days there a couple of weeks ago were pretty hard on Joe. He just wanted to lie down in the wagon and woulnd't talk or participate in any of the "tests" (hearing, physical therapy, etc.). Please, please pray that he would be calm tomorrow and God would just enable him to not be scared and get through all the appointments with mimimal screaming and crying, etc. He is not allowed to eat all morning due to sedation so that should be an added trial to his good mood. So, obviously we need a lot of supernatural strength tomorrow, as we do every day. It was so encouraging to see all of our prayers answered with "yes" after the last surgery. God has been so good and faithful to meet all our needs; it is just a constant battle to not be consumed with worry over every little thing with Joseph. So, please keep praying for us, especially all you little ones!

Thanks, Gillian (Sally!) for the update--it is good to know what to pray for specifically. I will pray tonight and all day tomorrow that Joseph will just supernaturally sense the love and care that St. Jude staff has for him--praying for God's peace in his heart, even in such a scary time. I am also praying for you and Allen, for the Lord to continue to carry you and cover you with his love. May you all sleep well tonight.

When our kids were little, they loved for us to give them a "telling story", which we made up on the spot...one of our fondest memories of tucking them in!!! I pray God would indeed stretch your imaginations and enlarge your vision of Who HE is!! I pray for rest for you and Allen and endurance for Joseph. Special love to "Guido" (aka Nana)!!

Thanks for the update, it sounds as if you all have adjusted to your new home, dogs and all.(I'm sure Millie and Laney are loving the attention!) I'd also love to hear the stories you, Allen, and Nana have made up. I bet they are great!! You are English majors!!!
I am constantly thinking of all of you and wondering how things are going. I will be praying and asking our Father to prepare Joseph, you, and Allen for tomorrow's full day at St. Jude. I will also pray that God will prepare the staff that will be working with Joseph; that He will use them to minister His love and that Joseph will respond to their requests.
I pray that you will rest tonight and that tomorrow you will see God's love in everyone you come in contact with at St. Jude.
"The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights."

I am praying right now that Joseph will have a good day at St. Jude's tomorrow. I pray the Lord will give him the patience to endure all the testing, the strength needed, and that he'll be able to withstand it all with minimal discomfort. Our hearts ache for all of you, and we will continue to lift you all up in prayer.

Romans 8:25 says "But if we hope for what we do
not yet have, we wait patiently for it".

Romans 15:13 (NLT)

So I pray that God, who gives you hope, will keep you
happy and full of peace as you believe in Him. May you
overflow with hope through the power of the Holy
Spirit.

Hebrews 11:1

What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what
we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of
things we cannot yet see.

We sincerely HOPE AND PRAY Joseph will be healed.

Dear Gillian and Allen,
I am so thankful that surgery went well and that the Lord made the tumor a different color than the brain tissue! Praise the Lord!
I will be praying for Joseph that the God of Peace would be with him and that he would provide His peace and give him rest. I will also be praying for you and all of the family that the Lord would refresh you and renew your spirits daily. I pray that He would provide you with manna, to give you exactly what you need when you need it. We love you and your family deeply.

So glad to get an update and to know how to pray in prep for all the appointments tomorrow. You all are constantly on our minds and hearts and in our prayers. Allison just got home from visiting a friend in NY and she saw your XMAS picture on our refrigerator and was shocked- we still haven't sent out our cards and they don't even include a picture! Just a small way that you amaze us as you walk this unbelievably difficult path. Love to all! And by the way, I feel really old- I don't know any of the characters from Cars! Praying for you before I go to bed! Love, Mel

Gillian,
We'll pray for all of your specific needs! I have to laugh on the stories. Since Matthew gets hooked on one book at a time, I'm learning to be very creative, too. I've modernized all of the old nursery rhymes. Our playgroup friends are very prominent in them also. I've also learned that Matthew and Sarah love my accents, but Chris thinks they are so bad he leaves the room. (pretty much same for singing!). My favorite personal adaptation is reading Maisy Drives the Bus in an English accent and explaining the elephant has to get off the bus bc he is too fat from eating junk food and not playing outside and Little Black Cat needs to wake up and get off at Stop #5 because Maisy is exhausted at the end of the day and really wants to go home and have a glass of wine and read the paper. :)
Another funny- we have great video of Matthew C-mas morning getting chocolate candy in his stocking. He says "whoa, treats" (pause) "these are for when I go poopy on the potty!"
Look for us on America's Funniest Videos...

Great to hear that Joseph is doing so well. Our thoughts are with you all today for his day at St. Judes. Coincidentally St. Genevieve's feast day, she is the patron saint of Paris, is today and she it is said miraculously stopped a pestilence in the 1100s when a relic of hers was brought through the streets. Not a bad day to start his time at St. Judes!! Love always, Susan and Brian

It is so good to come here this morning and see your update. I know this is all in Gods hands and He is directing each and every movement. I am so happy to hear that Josephs recovery from surgery is better than the last one. And it sure sounds like he prefers you guys personally over the TV. This is so good. I continue to pray for this sweet little man that this time of healing will be gentle and complete for him, and for his spirit to be protected as he encounters all of the treatments and therapy. Praying for your hearts to be protected as you see his reactions to fearful situations, knowing that this is being done to save his life. God is so good and will be with you every step of the way. May God cover you all with His Love.

Dear Gillian, Allen, Joseph, and Holly,

This is Antonia (Wright) Cobble, Lynn's friend from college. I have been following your blog and praying for sweet Joseph for awhile now (linked from the Farley's). However, I had no idea that this was YOU, Gillian!!! I had even looked at the pictures and not recognized you! Your hair is so long! Anyway, another college friend emailed me and told me about your blog and who you were and I was shocked. I have gone back and read every single post again from the perspective of knowing who all of you are and praying for you throughout the day and night. We too have a 3 year old little boy and I am praying for you every time I hold him and rock him. Thank you for sharing the story of God's faithfulness to you as he carries you through this on this blog. What a blessing and testimony you are!

dearest Gilla--

thanks for taking the time to direct our prayers today. I have been thinking about you and Allen as you are surely weary beyond description. I remember when I was caring for mom and would easily be overwhelmed by a sense of hoplessness and exaustion. It appears that you are battling these feelings well. I am lift your emotional state up to the Father often, asking him to bring to your mind the way he cares for the birds--
Mt. 2:25-27"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"

love you and so amazed at the way you are persevering!

Gillian-
I have prayed for you guys all day. It seems like God brought you to mind constantly...I prayed Joe would sleep in late so he wouldn't be hungry (I know, fat chance) and that everything would go smoothly and somehow you would get some really good news today. I was just reflecting tonight on the day I spent with you in the hospital- the day of Joseph's first surgery. It seems like time literally stopped and heaven and earth collided. I can't even explain it to anyone who wasn't there. I know SJ and I talked on the way home, as did Lynn and I, and it seemed like our souls were in such agony for you that we couldn't even re-enter reality. We continue to agonize with you. I kept thinking about how the Truths of God's Word seem so distant until you are faced with absolute crises of life and suddenly the reality of His Word and the very person of Christ are all that matter. We've experienced that frequently in recent years. A verse I have clung to since Chip died and what happened with my dad has been this: "I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Isreal, who summons you by name."
Isaiah 45.3
Sometimes the treasures of God come in the darkest times of life and all we have to do is simply sit in the quietness with God and "be". I love you so much and I pray for you so often. Oh, to be back to those days when all that mattered was raising support to spend a summer in Colorado or sitting in the grass smoking cigars!
-Ashley
